Genealogy Corner:
O'Neal- I have traced her husband's O'Neal lineage back five previous generations as follows; (John Wolf O'Neal, William O'Neal, John H.O'Neal, James O'Neal, Unknown O'Neal) so I've placed Andrew Jackson O'Neal in my personal notes as a sixth generation O'Neal. Seeing as how he was living in Logan County, West Virginia he appears in the Logan County files of my research.
Smith- If your last name is Smith and you are related to this Pearl Smith O'Neal you may wonder if I have had the opportunity to research her Smith lineage. I have only been able to figure out her father's name James "Jim" Smith.
White- If your last name is White you may have found this page because you are related to this Sarah E. White mentioned in today's edition. If so I would love to learn more about your family Connection. I have not been able to research the White line as much as I'd like to so I haven't traced the lineage back back very far as of yet. I believe her first name was Sarah. She may have been the daughter of B. W. White & S.G. Jarell. I'm in the middle of writing a book about the Jarrell family and looking forward to seeing how this connection might be related.
History:
Did you know?
On this date
August 24,1949- Shirley Mae O'Neal was being born. She was the daughter of Benjamin Harrison O'Neal and Francis McKinney of Bud, Wyoming County, West Virginia.
Letter From the Editor:
Dear Reader,
I usually don't have as much time as I'd truly like to spend researching and writing about an O'Neal life event so sometimes my newsletter doesn't always have every section filled out. I'm hoping that sooner or later I'll get to go back and add some details that might be missing. Also if I get feedback from a reader I will usually add that information in the addition section when something was updated. Then in the update section I tell you when the newsletter was last updated.
At some point you might be able to find all my newsletters on my website but for now I've been so busy writing the book entitled "Rachel O'Neal Jarrell" I haven't had time to set it up the way it should be.
In today's edition I'm highlighting the life of Mrs. Nancy Pearl Smith O'Neal. In doing the research for this publication I found out several things I didn't previously know the first time around. One of which was her name. All this time I had thought her name was Pearl. It turns out her name was Nancy Pearl. Also, I hadn't realized that her tombstone is wrong on the dates. They have engraved the wrong birth date and the wrong date of death. Plus, I hadn't even found the saddest thing of all. I found out that she died only seven days after her son had died! How tragic? It made me feel really sorry for Andrew and the rest of the family.
Sincerely,
Ray O'Neal

Nancy Pearl Smith O'Neal
Ancestry:
I have placed this Nancy Pearl Smith O'Neal in my personal notes as a sixth generation O'Neal because that is the generation she married into when she married Andrew Jackson O'Neal and he is listed in my personal notes as a sixth generation O'Neal because I had previously traced his O'Neal lineage back five previous generations. You might wonder was she directly related to me? Yes,she was the wife of my third great uncle.
Birth Information:
Nancy Pearl Smith was evidently born on August 26, 1888 (Alternative date of birth) August 26, 1892 in Cyclone, Logan County, West Virginia. She was the daughter of James "Jim" Smith and Sarah E. White of Logan County, West Virginia.
I could not find any record of a Nancy or a Pearl Smith being born in the birth records of Logan County West Virginia anywhere but especially around 1892. I did however find her marriage record which indicated she was 20 years old at the time of her wedding. She was married in 1908 which means she would have been born in 1888. Her tombstone however indicated that she was born on August 26, 1892. It is interesting to learn that in the first census record where I believe she appears in my opinion is the 1900 Federal Census as a niece of Nancy J. Elkins age 11 born Aug 1888. This is one other reason I believe I am correct on her actual date of birth but some may claim who does he think he is and why argue with what's carved in stone. Also when she appears in the 1910 Federal Census she's now 32 years old and would have been born in 1878? Who's also listed there? the aunt Nancy Elkins now age 74 she was 60 back in 1900. By the 1920 Federal Census Pearl is now younger and only 29 and Andy her husband is now 43. This record indicates that she was born in 1891. By the 1930 Federal Census she's 43 and he's 55. She would have been born in 1887. I say she was born in 1888. I believe I found her record of birth. I believe she was born on August 26,1888. I've attached the record as her record of birth in my list of sources. I've also added this as her date of birth and the date carved on her headstone as alternative date of birth. It's obvious you can't believe everything you read.
Marriage Information:
Nancy "Pearl" Smith married Andrew Jackson O'Neal on December 24, 1908 in Logan County, West Virginia. He was the son of John Wolf O'Neal and Nicatie Acord O'Neal of Raleigh County West Virginia. Her name changed from Smith to O'Neal on this date and she became family.
Death Information:
Nancy Pearl Smith O'Neal died at the actual age of 43 on Aug 24, 1932.She died in Davin, Logan County West Virginia due to an unforeseen or undiagnosed case of Myocarditis. She was buried on August 26, 1932. Her age does appear on the death certificate but not her date of birth. I still find it strange that the death record indicated she had to have been born in 1888 and yet the tombstone still read August 26, 1892. Also it had her date of death as 1931 rather than 1932. Regardless, she was buried in the Claypool Cemetery located in Davin, Logan County West Virginia. I found out later that she had died only seven days after her 20 year old son Clem O'Neal had passed away.
Legacy:
Mrs. Nancy Pearl Smith O'Neal left quite the legacy of you look at the list of children; Willard, Walter, James, Dewey, Mary, and Bruce O'Neal. She died at the age of 43. I looked to see if she had lived long enough to enjoy being a grandmother and unfortunately she may have only been able to have held her first grandson a few times because he was born on August 15, 1932. He became the Rev. Billy Jackson O'Neal of Logan County, West Virginia.
Obituaries:
I haven't been able to find her obituary on-line yet so I've recreated what it might have looked like below….
Nancy "Pearl" (Smith) O'Neal 43 of Davin West Virginia fell asleep in death on August 24, 1932. She died of an untreated heart condition known as Myocarditis. In my personal opinion, she died of a broken heart. Seven days earlier she had just lost her son Clem O'Neal in death. He was only 20 years old and had died of Typhoid fever and an infected hand lesion.
Nancy was always called Pearl and was preceded in death by her son Clem O'Neal. She was survived by her husband Andrew Jackson O'Neal and her other children; Willard, Walter, Dewey, Mary, and Bruce O'Neal. She was the proud grandmother of her first grandchild Billy O'Neal. She was laid to rest in the Claypool Cemetery not far from her son located in Davin Logan County West Virginia on August 26, 1932.

Questions Unanswered:
Who were her siblings?
Who were her grandparents?
Who were her grand children?
Scripture of the Day:
Mathew 28:19
"Go, therefore, and make disciples of people of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit"
Cross-references:
Acts 1:8 "But you will receive power when the holy spirit comes upon you, and you will be witnesses of me in Jerusalem, in all Ju·deʹa and Sa·marʹi·a, and to the most distant part of the earth"
Romans 10:18 "But I ask, They did not fail to hear, did they? Why, in fact, “into all the earth their sound went out, and to the ends of the inhabited earth their message.”
Romans 11:13 "Now I speak to you who are people of the nations. Seeing that I am an apostle to the nations, I glorify my ministry"
Revelations 14:6 "And I saw another angel flying in midheaven, and he had everlasting good news to declare to those who dwell on the earth, to every nation and tribe and tongue and people"
Acts 2:38 "Peter said to them: “Repent, and let each one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the free gift of the holy spirit"
Acts 8:12 "But when they believed Philip, who was declaring the good news of the Kingdom of God and of the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were getting baptized"
Getting the Point:
Some people wonder why I feel the need to witness about Jehovah God and his son Jesus Christ in my newsletters but reading today's scripture and cross references highlight the importance and why I feel the need! It seems that one of Pearl's grandsons was also like minded.
